Why Microsoft beats Apple at my college
Oct 23rd
It is my opinion that Apple’s hardware/software is better than Microsoft Windows and their accompanying PC’s. However, Apple computers are generally (according to PC users) a hair more expensive than their PC counterparts, yet I still prefer the products.
But one thing that annoys me is the fact that my college (University of Minnesota) has a MCA (Microsoft Campus Agreement), but doesn’t have one with Apple. Why does this matter? Because I can get Microsoft software for penny’s on the retail dollar, but with Apple I save a measly $100 on a $1300 system.
Take for example the pricing of Microsoft software below (as per our Campus Agreement):
- Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate: $7
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional: $6
- Microsoft Office 2007: Free Download, $7 for DVD
- Microsoft Office 2004 Mac: $7
Thats right, despite Windows Vista being a disappointment, I get Vista, on DVD an official with a CD key for $7. How much will OS X 10.5 Leopard cost me? $116, and that is WITH my discount.
Vista Ultimate Retail: $400, I paid: $7, saving 98.25%.
OS X Leopard Retail: $130, Student price: $116, saving 11%.
Whats with that? Why is it Microsoft is willing to be so giving to College students and faculty, while Apple is giving us such a small savings.
When buying my Macbook, I was given the $100 student discount. Microsoft gives a $393 discount on a single piece of software. Does Apple wonder why so much loyalty and market share is still in the hands of Microsoft? Sure, Apple did have the short period where you got a free iPod Nano when buying a Macbook, but this was because they were making new iPod models and needed to clear out inventory. The discount (even after the new models were released), did NOT apply to the new ones, only the older models. Not to mention the iPod required full payment up-front, then a mail-in-rebate to receive the check. Apple needs to change the way it deals with College students if it hopes to win them over. I can’t speak for businesses, only for my college. However I can say that Microsoft offering such a large discount does nothing but encourage people to keep using their PC.
Funny what google finds
Oct 21st
Doing some google searching I discovered a quote I said 2 years ago, at least on my old IRC channel that was listed on bash.org
Then I remember when I was called a penis by RedSector (a member of one of my old sites), I need to start more sites to cause more people to hate me I think.

Do your part – Seed Ubuntu 7.10
Oct 18th
Just telling everyone to not be a greedy P2P user like most of you are, and seed Ubuntu until you can’t seed anymore. I have uploaded over 9GB thus far, and I plan to keep going until I reach 100GB or so, if possible try to do the same. There are not enough functional mirror’s to seed out the images, yet alone the DVD image. So spread it around, and help everyone who want’s Ubuntu get it.

Microsoft Office 2008 Beta Review Series – Word
Oct 18th
Mac users have been waiting for a new version of Office, and it is finally almost here. Office 2007 for PC featured a major overhaul of the GUI making tasks ‘easier’ to perform, and giving word a cleaner, more Vista esque look. So what was Microsoft going to do for those of us who use the Mac OS? Well, their intentions are now clear, lets take a look at Microsoft Office 2008 – Word.

So where is Ubuntu 7.10?
Oct 17th
Ubuntu 7.10 was to be released on October 18th (today). So where is the link? The Ubuntu website (www.ubuntu.com) states “00 days to go”, yet the download links are only for 7.04. What gives?
I guess I am just impatient.
Don’t breathe Hydrochloric Acid fumes
Oct 17th
At work today, I opened a bottle of hydrochloric acid, and it started to have a ‘dry ice’ effect (appeared to be steaming), directly in my face. I closed the bottle, and guess what the bottle said (was well as wikipedia):
“Hydrochloric acid in high concentrations forms acidic mists. Both the mist and the solution have a corrosive effect on human tissue, potentially damaging respiratory organs, eyes, skin and intestines.”
Great, glad I inadvertently inhaled that.

Cartoon-Network now playing: Worlds Scariest Police Videos 2!
Oct 16th
Just as Cartoon Network wouldn’t play the Worlds Scariest Police Videos, a channel like Oh! Oxygen (women’s entertainment) wouldn’t show Girls Gone Wild commercials. So why is it a channel named MTV (aka Music Television) can get away with rarely ever playing actual music?
Anyone who has watched MTV knows their line-up of shows day-to-day consists of scripted ‘reality’ shows, 10 second music video clips between shows, and flat out poor-taste programming. So why is the channel so popular? If you are expecting an answer from me, I don’t have one to share. It’s odd how today we are so fascinated with watching other people’s lives. Many people spend countless hours watching a camera following someone else around. The person the camera is following never looks at the camera, which is expected but what is really strange is that even when the person the show revolves around is at, for example a party nobody at the party acknowledges the camera crew who is taping the party. That leads me to believe that the said reality show is more of a movie and less of a ‘reality’. Shows guilty of this are The Hills, and Laguna Beach, scripted ‘reality’.
Then they play shows like Parental Control, where a parent is upset with their child and tries to set them up with two other people, while the significant other watches them on the date. Who on earth would realistically go through that? Nobody. The show Next is just as bad, what girl would really date some guy who shows up on a bus? They wouldn’t, the show is scripted crap yet more and more are captivated by it every day.
I prefer to watch shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, 8 Simple Rules, Seinfeld, and the like. Why? Because that is good programming, not junk that tries to pass itself off as reality on a channel called Music TV.

If you really want to watch Music on MTV, either wake up early or tune in for an hour in the afternoon. Otherwise its reality show junk.
